P!nk’s “Stupid Girls”- Gender Representation & Feminist View

The “Stupid Girls” music video by artist P!nk tries to make a relevant argument for the role of women in society. Pink mocks different stereotypes of women in order to show them the “stupidity” that these roles carry. However, her messages in this video could be received as in fact opposing some feminist ideologies.

The music video starts off with a little girl watching television. This could be a comment by pink that young girls are very impressionable, and that this generation learn a lot of gender roles by what is presented to them through the television and other media. The young girl has a an angel and devil on each of her shoulders; this brings us to the first opposition of post-feminist ideologies in the video. Pink’s video presents that girls must choose one role or the other, pink therefore proposes that women cannot be pretty and pamper themselves while also having the role of a strong, assertive leader. Also, she proposes that for the female to be a strong leader they must take on male characteristics, like the picture above that shows P!ink with short hair and no make up (as well as the thumb thing that politicians always do). This totally goes against post-feminist ideologies as post-feminism is about celebrating a more even playing ground for both genders and embracing femininity and strength.
